Independence-v2The need to be independent is something many people tend to overlook as children, teens, and young adults grow older. Academics is what they are usually focused on. Get good grades, go to college, get a good job, etc. However, to achieve a lot of these things, independence to at least some level is needed.

The ability to manage their time and responsibilities, stay organized, initiate and finish tasks, communicate, and so much more are all great things to be able to do, but after a certain point, they need to be able to do these things on their own. Parents and guardians most likely won’t be able to hold their hands while they are away at college and transitioning into the adult world. They cannot be there while their child is at work/college to make sure they are writing down notes, finishing tasks on time, advocating for themselves, maintaining their hygiene, socializing and more, so it is crucial they are able to on their own. It is expected of them, and if they cannot do it, not only can they fall behind, but they may avoid progressing all together.

If young adults struggle with being independent, they may avoid it all together. The fear of failing or it being ‘too hard’ can deter them from wanting to even try, which may lead them to never fully becoming independent all together. Not getting a further education, not getting a job, not moving out, and overall, not reaching their fullest potential are all things they are at risk for if their skills are not developed. However, if proactive, and with the right help, getting them to feel confident in their ability to be independent can be made much easier.

Our team of Doctoral and Master level professionals utilizes a series of highly individualized strategies, services, and techniques to help young adults who are college bound, in college, and even after college succeed in and after their transition into adult life. We help teach them skills they need to be independent so they can be successful in the real and work world, help them learn how to balance independent life on their own, and other life, executive functioning, social skills, and emotional maturity. If your young adult is struggling with the transition into college and adulthood, CollegeLSP has the tools to aid them in achieving and generalizing such skills.
