This is a bit harder than I thought…
After being at college for a few months, Rachel found herself struggling more than she thought she would. Initially she thought going to college would be like the movies. She would show up, her classes and social life would run smoothly, and then she would repeat this process until she graduated. However, that was far from the truth. Rachel struggled to manage her time, never having enough to shower before class, and even brush her teeth some mornings. Although she made sure to when she returned, Rachel would then have to push other things back as well, offsetting her entire schedule.
This caused a lot of stress for Rachel, but instead of asking for help, she just let it all pile up. She was worried her mother would pull her from her dream college she worked so hard to get into and make her go somewhere else, or even return home, so she tried to deal with it herself. Yet, as time went on, she realized she was in far too over her head, and as she spoke to her mother she quickly reached out to the College Life Skills Program for help.
There, they met with a coach virtually so they could try and figure out a way to help Rachel while she was still attending the college of her choice. With the counselor, Rachel was able to learn how to manage a planner, set her alarms and actually get up earlier before class so she could shower and brush her teeth, as well as other life skills so she felt confident in her ability to be independent, all while still in her dorm room. As they received this coaching, with a level of accountability, her ability to manage these changes made the transitioning process far less difficult.
Having a program be individualized can help young adults strengthen the skills they need, while not wasting time on the ones they don’t. Life during and after college is far more than just academic. Skills such as being able to manage their time, plan, prioritize, socialize appropriately with peers, professors, colleagues and bosses, working memory, staying hygienic and so much more are all things young adults need to be able to do while living independently. However, for some, these skills may not come as easily to them as it may for others. This can be frustrating for them, especially if lacking these skills adds onto their already busy schedule. Wanting to drop out, not work, and avoiding becoming independent as a whole can all be a result of these struggles, but with the proper help, developing them can be made easier.
At the College Life Skills Program, we can help young adults develop the skills they need to be successful without forcing them to leave the school of their choice. With our staff of highly qualified professionals, we can help students reach their goals both virtually, and in person at our office in Boca Raton. We help them build confidence and accountability, track progress, set goals, and improve their independent and life skills by checking in regularly while monitoring and adapting our program to fit their needs.
