Transitioning into adulthood is already hard enough. Between the sudden increase in responsibilities, freedom, and overall life changes, the amount of struggles we face can grow as well. If we are not careful, this can then cause young adults to feel as if they are drowning. From school to work and even their personal and social life, adulthood can be a difficult time to manage all on your own, which is why we at the College Life Skills Program (CLSP) can be an added support to help navigate all these changes. We want to provide young adults not only with the skills they need to be successful before, during, and after college, but make it easy and clear how to do so. Trying to get help shouldn’t add onto the already existing stress, which is why CLSP has a step-by-step process on how we operate to best help you.
- Initial Contact and Consultation
- First, we set up a complementary 15-minute phone call with Dr. Nach directly. There he will discuss with you the challenges the child is facing, what the parent concerns and goals for the child are, and determine if we are a good fit for you.
-
- If we are not a good fit: Dr. Nach will refer you to someone he thinks will be better fit
- If we are a good fit, we will review the next steps with you
-
- Scheduling the Functional Assessment
- Once we determine our services are right for you, we will set up a 90-minute functional assessment
- This assessment is NOT to diagnose them
- We utilize this to identify their strengths and weaknesses (executive functioning, life skills, academics, independence, emotional regulation, etc.).
- We also speak to both the child and the parent
- This then helps us identify the proper way to help the child, focusing on what they need rather than what they don’t
- This also allows us to properly place them based on their age, abilities, and needs
- Assessment Completion and Written Report
- After the assessment, you will receive a comprehensive written report
- It will be emailed to you within about 1 week
- Included are assessment findings, the areas the child is needing support, and recommendations tailored to college demands
- Parent and Student Review
- Parents review the report prior to the follow-up appointment
- This step is important because it helps with; understanding the assessment results and how they translate to the real-world, prepare questions they may have, and set their expectations about the support they need
- Comprehensive Follow-Up Appointment
- To set up the assessment, parents call the office
- The follow up is a 30-minute zoom call with Dr. Nach
- There, he will discuss the services and parents can talk about their concerns and the role they will play in achieving these goals
- Service Planning and Scheduling
- Parents and students will discuss which services match their needs
- A personalized support plan is created
- Services will be scheduled to begin at CLSP
- Recommended Services and Frequency
- Services will be provided at the frequency the student requires. If they need more, we will provide more. If they need or begin needing less, we will adjust to ensure their program is it for them
- Academic and accountability check-ins are also implemented to monitor, review goals, and adjust strategies
